Raymond McEvoy came into Staffords in 1956 with a dog bred in New Ross, County Wexford called "Binglea Joker". He was a very game dog and would qualify at the Badger Trials. "Joker" was sired by "Yeckim" and Yeckim would also establish him in the Dublin line of dogs. Raymond would then get a bitch from Jack Barnard in England of the famous Chestonian prefix in 1957. The bitch called "Chestonion Creation" a small light made up bitch with remarkable speed, and nose and deep game. One day out hunting she got into a badger sett and was caught betwen "Fatz" (Binglea Joker) and a badger which cost her her life. Raymond would now enter the world of show dogs and like Sid Craik, he would get a pup from Abe Harkness. At that time the Senkrah prefix was world famous. But no one could have foreseen he impact these two litter sisters would make and the records they would set.
From Clonmel in Tipperary, where Raymond and Nancy still live, Senkrah Sabeau would head to England to seek her English title that her litter sisters Senkrah Sapphire and Senkrah Saffron already got. That title would be got in style getting her 3rd CC and B.O.B at Crufts under John Gordon. Now Raymond and Nancy McEvoy's was the breed's first Irish English champion bitch and the McEvoy's the first Irish owners to make up an English champion. Raymond and Nancy would create another record, the first Irish breeders of an English champion in Evie Hill's CH "Kinderlee Cashelle", top winning Stafford in England 1967.She was out of Sabeau x IR CH Thoroak Sorrel Sam.
I owned her litter sister "Raynan Conchita" and Tom Murphy, owner of Sorrel Sam had another sister, a very good badger bitch who died young. Raymond McEvoy would keep a dog from this litter "Raynan Commando" and he would gain his Irish title. Commando would win a Green Star when he was nine years old. This was down to the fantastic condition he was kept in. Within that small kennel you also had IR CH "Raynan Dandy" and IR CH "Weycombe Vanessa" and from the breeding of Vanessa to Dandy another record as they would produce ENG CH "Durward Demon". This was the first champion bred in Ireland from a sire and dam owned by the same person.
A 3/4 brother of CH Durward Demon would go to America. This was "Raynan Jasper" and he was behind a number of very good dogs of the "Dynamite" prefix and some were bred into "Ordays Leo" (Geronimo x Evergreen Patsy) who was also sent out of Ireland resulting in some very game dogs like "Doc" "Ethel" "Bambi" and "Lady Orday".
Clonmel would go from a small open show to a championship show thanks to the McEvoys. When an operation went wrong on Nancy hands and with Raymond away at work, it proved impossible to keep Staffords. Senkrah Sabeau stamped her class on so many great dogs in the show ring and working dogs. Her blood can be found in the Flynn dogs, “Psycho”, Gerry Allen's, Gerard Crotty's and Christy McCarthy's breeding
Raymond and Nancy were highly respected show judges and Raymond was a frequent exhibitor n England for years. He was the cornerstone of the breed here and made it so easy for us to follow. Their record in Stafford will stand for all time and it could not have happened to nicer people. Like a lot of people, if the clock could be turned back, badger drawing would not have played a part in Raymond's life.
